The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
The diagram illustrates how a hydroelectric power station produces electricity. The whole procedure comprises of two parts of a day, a night shift and a day shift.
Overall, the process starts by accumulating water in a high level reservoir where the river acts as the source of energy and ends at the power station by producing and transmitting electricity through the national grid.
The first stage commences near the dam, where the reservoir collects water during the night-time. Later on, during the daytime, the opening of the gate under the dam allows water to flow toward the reversible turbines, which generate electricity. Following the generation of electricity, a set of power lines distribute electricity through the national grid.
However, during night, the reversible turbines pump water into the high level reservoir through opening the gate of the dam by alternating the rotational direction of turbine blades. The alternation is done with the help of generator, which provides the required energy in the form of electricity supplied by the grid.
