The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph illustrates how the products were transported in the UK during period of 28 years from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, it can be seen that the primary means of transportation in the UK was that of road. All the four modes of transport increased over the period, apart from rail. Rail transport saw some fluctuations.
The amount of goods transported by road was around 70 million tonnes in 1974, then it increased steadily, apart a slight dip in 1982, and reached almost 100 million tones in 2002. The water transport rose during the period of 1974 and 1994 from 40million tones to 50million tones, then after a small dip in 1998, it reached approximately 70 million tones.
The rail transport started at 40 million tones in 1974, but then declined steadily till 1994 at around 30 million tones and then rose back up to its starting point. The quantity of merchandise shipped through pipeline started with a negligible figure and then it rose significantly to reach just over 20 million tones by the end of the period.
