TED for shrimp boats
The reading presents some evidence which indicate that TED (turtle excluder device) is not a rational innovation to prevent the endangered sea tutle species from being catched by the shrimpers' nets. The professor, however, challenges the claims made by the article and refutes them all.
First, the author argues that it is very rare that turtles get trapped and on averege, only one shrimp boat accidentally catches one turtle. In addition, TED cause many shrimps escape. In contrast, the lecturer asserts that due to the limited number of these endangered speicies, this amount of turtle is a high percentage.
Furthermore, the writer states that there are many effective methods which can be used instead of TEDs. One method that can be used is shortening the time limit of being the nets under water. The speaker, on the other hand, contends that monitoring thousands of boats is implausible. It is more reasonable to use TED than the afformentioned method.
Finally, the passage says that some larger turtle species cannot fit through the escape passage of standarded TED. Conversely, the lecturer posits that TED can be designed with a changeable escape passage.
