The sound of cracking bones is satisfying to Myungsoo's ears, something he'd enjoy tremendously if it wasn't for the dread that's fighting his way through his stomach and up, up, up.
This mission is easy, too easy if you ask Myungsoo. Too easy for his liking that it leaves him antsy, hands aching with crackling energy to do something, anything. The kind of easy that makes him wonder if this was a set trap - but no one asks Myungsoo, because asking isn't Sungyeol's style. Stealth and silence are the latter's best virtues when working. And Myungsoo isn't the rambling or talkative type either. So he cracks the man's neck and chalks the dread down before it rises up any further.
Only one person is left and then they’re clear to go.
Myungsoo looks down as the sword goes deep into the flesh, painting his white shirt with angry red, more vibrant than the sunset sky above them. Myungsoo could almost say the color is beautiful; how it starts out pink and morphs into a tint close to violet, except it isn't, because it's his own blood.
The mission wasn't supposed to go like this, it was supposed to go smoother since him and Sungyeol - the most skilled two in the team - were paired together again- he can see Woohyun's scowl and his trademark ' lucky bastards ' sneer in his mind's eye. They got rid of their enemies earlier, had they not?
So why is he laying on his back on the ground, with a stinging in his right side?
The pain hadn't been registered yet, all he feels is a burning sensation that spreads fast all over his body.
He looks over at Sungyeol, confused, trying to find answers in the warm brown eyes, trying to find tears. But the older’s face is obscured by shadows as he is hovering over him.
He faintly remembers that he must press hard at his wound to lessen the blood loss, he can recall that from when he got his training, when they were young and naïve enough to join the forces. And there's something about warping and a herb that he can't remember.
Sungyeol beats him to it, pressing faintly. "There's no use," he whispers gently, shaking his head.
And Myungsoo doesn't understand why there is no tears in the other's eyes.
Until he sees the sharp steel in the other's hands, covered in red.
His eyes widen. "I don-" he spits blood "I don't understand" his chest heaves violently, taking a breath is becoming a hard task.
"Haven't you figured it out yet? You were quite the smart one among us!" Sungyeol caresses Myungsoo's cheek, the color is slowly fading away. "There's no allies, in this game, Myungsoo-ah."
There's a loud ringing sound in his ears that turns out to be Sungyeol's laugh. And Myungsoo feels a sharp searing pain in his heart, like his heart is being stabbed by million swords at once, the pain comes crashing at him, crippling in its force. He wonders if that's what death feels like.
"They say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer," Sungyeol smiles at him.
He remembers the day he met Sungyeol, the older has approached him with the same smile. And he wonders if that's what his mentor has meant with 'See the end from the start'.
He looks at the sky; a violent shade of red with angry splotches of orange, a bird cries in the background. He closes his eyes, wondering if the sky has always looked this-
