The reading and the lecture are both about fossils of Sinosauropteryx, which is preserved in volcanic ash, and indicated that this kind of dinosaur may had feathers. The author of the reading implies that Sinosauropteryx had plumage by indicating some reasons. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author.
First of all, the author of the passage alleges that the lines in the animal body may not have any function in the living of dinosaur, but after the dead of Sinosauropteryx they may decomposed by fibers and are misinterpreted as evidence of plumage. The lecturer, however, posits that the reasons of decomposition made by the writer is not convincible. She added that the burned fossils find in the burned site shows that this are not decomposed by fibers, and the lines are the feathers of the Sinosauropteryx.
Secondly, the writer of the passage contends that as scientists can not analyse the remains fossils, they may be another part od the Sinosauropteryx body, like frill. This argument challenged by the speaker. She established that the chemical composition of the frill and feathers are different from each other, since the frill does not have carton and the feathers have, the evidence extremely agrees the idea that Sinosauropteryx had plumage.
Finally, it is mentioned in the reading passage that as feathers help animals to fly or regulate the internal body temperature, the fossils indicate that Sinosauropteryx had feather on its tail and backbone. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this by asserting that in addition to regulate body temperature or fly, feathers may be used for showcase. She added that analysis showed that Sinosauropteryx's feathers were colorful, orange and white, so that they are used for displaying.
