the graph below shows the average number of UK commuters travelling each day by car, bus or train between 1970 and 2030.
The line graph compares how many British people travelling by car, bus or train on a daily basis from 1970 to 2030.
Overall, the number of commuters who choose the bus to travel sees a significant decrease while the figures for car drivers and train passengers show opposite trends over the period surveyed. It is noticeable that the car is the most popular means of transport.
In the year 1970, 5 million commuters travelled by car, compared to 4 million and about 2 million people commuting by bus and train, respectively. Ten years later, the figures for the three kinds of surveyed transport remained unchanged. Over 30 years, the respective numbers of drivers and commuting rail passengers climbed marginally by 2 million and 1 million.
In 2030, it is predicted that the driver numbers will reach 9 million per day, in comparison with a drop of 1 million expected to see in the number of bus users. In the same year, the figure for the train is likely to increase dramatically to around 4.5 million.
