The graph below shows the US consumers' average annual expenditures on cell phone and residential phone services
The line graph compares the average spending on cell phone and domestic phone services per year (in dollars) of people in the US over 9 years from 2001.
Overall, handset service experienced a rise in its expenditure, while residential phone service showed an opposite trend during the period surveyed.
As can be seen from the graph, in the year 2001, the amount of money spent on local phones was relatively high, closed to 700 dollars, which was over tripled that of cell phones. Over the following 5 years, spending on cell phones soared to approximately 550 dollars, surpassed residential service to become the most popular service with the Americans. During the same period, there was a significant fall by around 200 dollars in the amount of money spent on local phones. That figure decreased continuously for the rest of the period.
By 2010, American residents spent nearly 800 dollars on handsets, compared to a mere 400 dollars of local service.
