communal online encyclopedias
While the passage talks about the drawbacks of communal online encyclopedias as compared to the traditional encyclopedia books, the speaker talks about how these are misconceptions by prejudiced academicians and how communal online encyclopedias are better than traditional encyclopedia books.
First, it is true that the communal online encyclopedias have errors in them. But, are traditional encyclopedia books any exception? Be it online or traditional offline books, it is impossible to find a source that is perfectly accurate. Moreover, it is easier to correct misinformation in the online encyclopedias where as in the traditional books, the inaccurate information will persist for years.
Second, the passage states that the communal online encyclopedias are susceptible to be fabricated by hackers and unscrupulous users. However, these encyclopedias are protected in a way that the changes are verified by special editors to make sure that no wrong information or fabricated information is entered. Moreover, the indisputable facts in the encyclopedia are not given editing rights to the users.
Finally, the passage claims that the communal online encyclopedias cover only trivial or popular topics to a great depth. However, as the books are written by a group of academicians, they may not cover a great range of topics or interests of the users. In contrast, as the communal online encyclopedias are written by a large number of users, they cover a great diversity of topics that can cater to a wide range of users and this is the strongest advantage over offline books.
