Some students prefer classes with frequent discussions between the professor and the students with almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with many lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Different students have different preferences of learning and it is important for each one to find their own styles to maximize the learning. I personally feel that neither of the mentioned methods: classes with frequent discussions with almost no lectures or the classes with only lectures and no discussions would be beneficial for learning. I feel this way for the following reasons.
First, the classes with only discussion would not really help because it is really difficult to learn from such kinds of classes. Not all the students would be engaged in such discussions. Moreover, there is every chance that the class might deviate from the main point of the discussion. Such classes would be useful only if the students already have a good grasp of the subject. Not all students can proactively participate in the discussion in which case, it is just a waste of time attending the class for such students.
Second, on the other hand, the classes only with lectures and no discussion may be useful to some students but can seem boring to the others. This is so because such classes arouse no interest in the students. Moreover, they do not help in developing critical thinking that would help students research and learn beyond the classrooms. Consequently, such classes are doing harm in a way that they do not encourage the students to think and analyze on their own. This would have a drastic effect in the long run on the professional careers of the students where critical thinking can help boost their career manifold.
I feel that there has to be a balance of both the lecture and discussion about the topic in the class. On one hand, this style of class would arouse interest for the subject among most of the students. And on the other hand, it will also stimulate critical thinking in the students which is very useful for any student to succeed in any field. The lecture would first help students get acquainted with the topic and a discussion would help the professor imbue the topic into the minds of the students. The discussions would also help in developing soft skills that play a pivotal role in professional careers.
Thus, neither the classes only with discussion nor the classes only with lectures and no discussion are good for the students as the former can seem haphazard and digressing while the later does not help in developing critical thinking and soft skills. A mixture of both the lecture and a discussion would help students benefit the most not only in terms of grades but also help them learn life lessons.
