Summarize the main points in the lecture, explaining how they cast doubt on the idea in the passage
In the lecture, the professor mainly talks about the problems with the grading system and organization of US schools inherited from the European ones. The first main problem deals with differences in the readiness to attend school of each child. One can be ready to begin when four or five, or one can be ready to begin when eight, but they all have to do so when they are six years old. The second main difference is the one between boys and girls in their teens. Then they are at different stages of their development, but have to be group in the same classes in the same grades according to their age.
Then the lecturer talks about the less obvious problems. Those that are related to the fact there are preliminary, intermediate and secondary grades. A child is to continue to the next grade if he/she has passed all the classes in the current one, otherwise the whole material of the grade must be repeated. This results to boredom and higher dropout rates. The other problem is the usage of standardized tests which are more suitable for grading the group rather than the individual. The last problem that is touched in the lecture is the fact that some children learn slower and need more time to go through the material, while other that are faster have to wait for them, as they are grouped in the same classes.
