In the reading passage, the author discusses several methods of protecting the forests from being infected by the P. ramorum have been proposed, while the lecture claims that what the passage state is not convincing and disputes those ideas presented in the passage with several proofs.
Firstly, according to the passage, it is suggested that many P. ramorum spores can be found along hiking or biking trails, indicating human-assisted spread by way of shoes and bicycle tires. In this case, people should encourage hikers to wash their shoes and install new bike scrubbers on bicycle trails. In contrast, the professor argues in the lecture that the virus would not spread only from human. There are other ways that could accelerate the speed, such as rain or water stream which flow through a long distance. Threfore, it is hard to control the diffusion of the P. ramorum.
In addition, the statment in the reading material indicates that a few fungicidal chemicals could be used to stimulate the oak trees' natural defense against the P. ramorum. On the country, the professor points out that this method has only short effectiveness after direct injection. Moreover, this way is not practical since it is not useful for the entire forest. What have remember is that it is equally expensive.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that the way of clear-cutting, which means that cutting and burning the diseased oaks aling with the semmingly healthy vegetation surrounding the oaks. However, the speaker argues that this approach would destroy some non-infection vegetation and trees. Some of these species are pretty treasured in the forest. Clear-cutting means a great ecological damage than the funhus itself.
