Education is a birth right of every human and it's access should not be limited, as a luxury, to only a few wealthy people. I believe education should be made more accessible and partially agree with the view that education, in particular the primary level of education should be free for everyone.
Currently a plethora of schemes which simplify the access to education are already widely available. Measures such as providing education loans with zero rate of interest, introducing fee waiver schemes for the destitute families, scholarship policies for the meritorious students at the school level, government funding to colleges and universities, are being implemented in many countries. For example, the already existing "Bharat Mata" scholarship for the single girl child from socially or economically backward communities is enabling India to progress in the field of education and research. To substantiate further, it has been reported that the number of school drop-outs has reduced from 25 millions in 2003 to 8.1 million in 2009 due to these efforts. Clearly, the policies in place are continuously enhancing the reach of education to all sections of society.
Moreover, it's a natural human tendency that anything which is made free, declines in its value and same can be the case with education as well. Because there is an immense effort which goes into acquiring higher degrees, it is viewed with so a lot of respect, which if otherwise, would not require many students to truly strive for it. Additionally, making higher education free would even lower the motivation level of faculty members, thereby lowering the overall quality of schooling. Consequently, the chances of rise in the failure percentage could rise after the students realize that there is no pressure of paying fees. Hence, reducing fees for schools and colleges to nothing, can be detrimental for the teaching system itself.
To conclude, more policies should be made to make at least the primary education almost free for everyone but higher education should be made more easily accessible and not completely tuition-free for all.
