The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The pie chart and table above illustrate the key causes of global land degradation and the distinguishing effects on 3 specific countries in the 1990s.
The first impression is that over-grazing was the most significant factor while over-cultivation was seen to account for the least proportion among the top three. Another outstanding feature is that Europeans witnessed their total land degraded the most during the 1990s.
In particular, 35% of worldwide land devaluation occurred after the appearance of over-grazing activities. Furthermore, while over-cultivation processes led to 28% of the less productive land which ranked number 3 in the group, there were also other minor elements making up 7%. On the other hand, it can be observed from the table that there was 23% of land in Europe that became less fertile. In contrast, this figure in North American countries was only 5% in total. A crucial point worth mentioning is differences in each problematic activity’s statistics compared to the world’s tendency. For instance, in the 1990s period, over-glazing activities resulted in the least figure of land degradation while this was the number one issue for the world.
