The chart shows the average class size in six countries and compares it with the world average class size in 2006.
The bar chart compares six countries with the world in terms of numbers of students per class in 2006, divided into two categories: elementary students and lower middle ones.
Overall, South Korea had the largest class sizes and class sizes in primary schools were generally smaller than those in lower secondary schools.
There were 31 students per class in both South Korea and Japan’s primary schools, while typical UK and Mexican elementary classes consisted of 25 children. In contrast, the figures for Denmark and Iceland were considerably smaller, which were just below the world average of 19.
With respect to junior high school, the average number of students in a South Korean class was 41, which was more than twice the size of the world average class. While the respective figures for Japan and Mexico were 33 and 34, there were only 24 students per class in the United Kingdom. Remarkably, Denmark and Italy were the only two countries whose class sizes were smaller than the world average, with 19 and 17 kids, respectively.
