The charts below display the amounts of electricity produced by fuel source in Australia and France in two time horizons 1980 and 2000.
To be more specific, in 1980, the total electricity production in Australia is slightly more than that in France, which is 100 units and 90 units respectively. However, French electricity production experienced a stronger growth than Australia, resulting in 180 units in total electricity, while total production of Australia reached 170 units.
When focusing on the production structure, it’s clear there were dramatic changes occurring in both two countries. For Australia, electricity supplied by coal is the largest part, up to 50 units, compared to other sources such as oil, natural gas and hydro, which are respectively 10, 20, 20 units. Nevertheless, during this 20-year period, we saw a sharp decline in both oil and natural gas, which was reduced to 2%. Furthermore, the production provided by coal surged to 130 units, while electricity from hydro power increased to 36 units not as significant as that of coal. One thing to be noticed here is that Australia doesn’t depend on nuclear power at all.
As for France, electricity supplied by nuclear power proliferated from 15 units to 126 units, while we saw a significant shrink in both natural gas and hydro power from respectively 25 units and 5 units to both 2 units. However, the amounts of electricity production of coal and oil stayed unchanged over 20 years.
In a conclusion, the charts present changes taking place both in total production and source structure in Australia and France during 20 years.
