The given bar chart compares the number of people(in thousands) from both the sexes who pursued a higher level of education, which was further classified as full-time and part-time studies, in Britain over a period of three years from 1970/71 to 1990/91.
Looking from the overall perspective, it is readily apparent that although the initial figure for females was significantly low as compared to males, the former exceeded the latter in part-time studies and followed a similar number as men in full-time education. However, among both genders, part-time education was more popular.
According to the given illustration, about 1 million males enrolled for further part-time studies at the start of the period, a figure up by nearly one-fourth in comparison to the opposite sex. However, over time, a reverse trend dramatically pushed the female number to a peak value of over 1 million. On the contrary, a few fluctuations plummeted the number of men below 850 thousand.
Turning to the full-time educational courses, both the genders witnessed an increasing trend. Whilst males doubled in number to 200k by 1990/91, females observed a sharp upward trend in 1980/81. After that, the figure leveled off to value the same as men by the end of the period.
