TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the
The humpback whales navigation during their migration is a mysterious problem. The passage suggests that they are navigating by stars and provides three reasons to support this claim. In contrast, the professor believes these reasons are false and refutes each of them.
First, the author suggests that these creatures are intelligent and have a very complex brain that helps them navigate by stars. However, the professor rejects this point. He states that the complex and intelligent brain have not any connection with this ability. There are many birds, such as ducks, that have this ability to find ways by stars with a medium level brain. Actually, they are born with this option. So, the complicated mind of whales does not mean to have this ability.
Second, the reading mentions that these mammals are traveling in a straight line, and to do that they need an external feature and the only possibility for them is the stars. The professor states that, albeit they need external equipment but, this equipment is the earth's magnitude field. Their brain has a part called biomagnetic that helps them to use the magnetic field of the earth to find their way.
Finally, the passage suggests that they have spy-hopping behavior which is rare between animals. The lecturer rejects this claim and states that this behavior is rare but sharks have it and they do not migrate at all. So, the whales might not watch stars. Also, they use this behavior even in the day time, when there is no star in the sky.
In this way, the professor argues by the claim of the reading that these creatures use the stars to find their way in migration.
