The author cites three methods to protect the forests from the threat of P.ramorum, a kind of fungus, in the reading material. Nevertheless, the lecture lecturer's lecturer argues that the reading material methods are ineffective and impractical and opposes them accordingly.
First and foremost, the author claims that since the spores spread with humans' assistance, taking some methods to change certain human behaviors can be an effective and low-cost way to stop the spread of P.ramorum. However, the lecturer offers the opposite opinion that despite human-assisted, there is another way for the spores spread, which is harder to control, water-assisted spread - the spores merged with rainwater falls into streams and goes far away.
Besides, the lecturer casts doubt on the author's other method that fungicidal chemicals, which defenses against the P.ramorum fungus and reduces infection possibility, can protect the oak trees. The lecturer demonstrates that the chemicals only work when they are injected directly into the tree's trunk. Meanwhile, the injection's effect lasts just a few months. Hence, it will be too expensive and impractical to inject every individual in a forest with thousands of trees.
Finally, the author's third method, an approach called clear-cutting (clearing large areas of vegetation in places where diseased trees found), is an efficient measure to stop the infections spread, is also counteracted by the lecturer. The lecturer points out that even though this kind of sacrifice may sometimes work, it will destroy those health vegetation, including rare species of trees that cannot quickly grow back. The ecological damage of rare trees loss will be even more significant than the P.ramorum's.
