ice age
The reading and the lecture are both about the cause of cold weather of the little ice age. The author provides some reasons for this cold temperature. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading by providing three reasons. The lecturer says that these evidences are not convincing.
First of all, according to the author, disruption of ocean currents may be the one reason. He says that cold water from melted glaciers disrupted the Gulf Stream, and resulted in the Little Ice Age. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He states that disruption of the Gulf Stream only causes cooling of the Europe and the North America. On the other hand, this Little Ice Age is also affecting southern hemisphere like New Zealand and South America.
Secondly, the author states that dust clouds and sulfur gas released due to the volcanic eruption. These can block the sunlight, and cause lower temperatures. Nevertheless, the lecturer mentions that these large dust clouds in the atmosphere must have some striking visual effects like colorful sunsets and grey or brown snow. People did not notice these effects which means that volcanic eruption is not strong enough to release such a large dust clouds.
Finally, the author points out that decline in human population resulted in less human activities. Forest trees started growing abundantly on fields which are decreasing greenhouse effect by absorbing carbon dioxide. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that this effect does not have time to work. Human population started growing back to previous level quickly. Therefore, forest trees are not there long enough to cause long term cooling effect. The Lecturer claims that the forest trees are being cut down again to grow crops for this increasing population.
