Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture offer two opposing views on the advantages that social might take by high taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy foods. Whereas the author of the reading suggests that there are many benefits for society with this policy, the lecturer argues that this concept is very challenging. She casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First, according to the text, high taxes on cigarettes could avoid people buying this product which is beneficial for their health. However, the lecturer asserts that the high price of cigarettes leads to buying lower price one which has lower quality as well. She also mentions that people will spend their money on expensive, unhealthy foods and with lack of money they are not be able to buy healthier foods.
Secondly, the author states that the tax of cigarettes and unhealthy foods is fair to be high because of the high medical costs of addicted people. Although, the lecturer disputes that in the case of addiction among all group of people such as low incomes and high incomes, the low incomes might have more pressure to satisfy their needs, and the same condition for unhealthy foods.
Finally, the text explains the profits which will government have by high cigarettes and unhealthy foods’ taxes, in favor of a variety of public projects. While the lecturer implies that it has many downsides as well. She believes that government might avoid banning the smoke of cigarettes in public places because of their profits. Government would not forfeit the incomes provided by high taxes of unhealthy foods or cigarettes.
To recap, the lecturer believes that this policy has many disadvantages which is not worth to be accomplished. She explains that low income people will be hurt from this notion and also, she says that government, due to its high income, will be encouraged to not avoid any smoking in public areas by any rule.
