the bar charts illustrate the proportion of boys and girls aged 5-14
who took part in cultural and sporting activities held in 2003 in Australia
Overall, in terms of sports, it appears that more boy participated
in such activities than girls. As for four cultural activities,
what stands out is that an almost equal percentage of participants
of both gender joined drama and singing while the female participation
the rate in dancing was significantly higher than that of their male counterparts.
Also of note is that more boys opted to play musical instruments than girls.
Looking at the details, it is clear that marginally more female children
participated in drama and singing than male ones (at roughly 5%). The biggest
difference in participation rate could be seen in dancing with exactly
25% of girls doing this activity as opposed to 3% of boys. With regard to playing instruments, the proportion of girls who joined this activity
was two-thirds that of boys, with 10% and 15% respectively.
With respect to sport, about half of the girls got involved in
this which was moderately lower than the percentage of boys who took part in
physical activities, at precisely 70%.
