In the 1950s Torreya taxifolia, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya will soon become extinct. Experts are considering three ways to address the decline of Torreya.
In his argument, the author of the reading states three reliable ways to address the decline of Torreya. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She uses the following evidence to suggest that neither the change in location nor monitoring from specialists will encourage the tree specie to develop and stop the extinction process.
The first contradicting point is the reestablishing the location in which those trees have ever been in abundance. According to the reading passage, the seed of the Torreya could be moved to the north Florida, where a microclimate is especially friendly for those trees. The lecturer rebuts this argument, saying that drained lands of Florida alongside with Global Warming effect may detrimentally affect the species of those trees.
Another controversial issue is the ability to move the seed far north closer to native locations with cooler temperatures. The author of the reading claims that the move of seeds of Torreya to friendly location may boost their growth. This point is challenged by the lecturer who claims that the science already knows the relevant example of the same experiment. She presents an example of the Black locust, a naturally north specie, which have previously been moved far north, killing local species there.
The third aspect of the debate is the use of specially developed research centres. The author of the reading passage puts forth the idea that the samples could be moved to preserved areas with well-established monitoring process from scientists. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that such trees may survive potential diseases only if it grows in large quantities, and that the research centres are not capable of growing enough number of trees.
To sum up, the author and the lecturer have different points of view. While the former believe that three propositions may foster the growth of nearly extinct tree specie, the latter believe that neither of proposed ways will work.
