TPO 54 Integrated Writing
The reading passage states three methods that can be used to reverse the trend of the Salton Sea becoming salty, whereas the professor believes that none of the method is practical.
To begin with, the reading suggests to use desalination facilities to evaporate the water from the lake into salt-free water with salt left behind. The professor however, argues that it will cause other environmental problems, because the solid left behind after the evaporation contains not only salt, but also chemical which is probably toxic. If the winds blow it in the air, people have to suffer from the risk of breath them in, which is dangerous to human lives.
Furthermore, the author of the passage advises to bring the ocean water directly into the lake as the salt level of the ocean water is 20 percent lower than that of the lake water. In contrast, the professor suggests that it is not realistic by the explanation that the far distance between the lake and the ocean makes it so expensive to build a pipeline which the government won't have any resource to pay for it.
Finally, the writer suggests to build walls to divide the lake into low-salt area and salty area on the basis of evidence that the freshwater from small rivers will lower the salinity of the main section which is smaller. On the contrary, the professor indicates that it may work but not for long due to the fact that the frequent geological activities will break down the walls. The barrier will collapse when the earthquake takes place the next time, which will cause the salt in the salty area will go back into the main section.
