Overall, there was a significant variation in the proportion of people moving to Australia. Initially, Italy had the biggest figure for immigrants to Australia but at the end of the period, immigrants were evenly contributed by all five regions
It is evident from the chart that the percentage of residents in Australia came from Italy and New Zealand followed a similar trend and both experienced a downward pattern. Starting at 40% in 1962, the data of Italian immigrating to Australia witnessed almost a threefold decrease to 15% in 2002. The same pattern can be seen for New Zealanders, with the figure dropping from 8% to 5% between 1962 and 2002.
A significant growth was seen in India, in 1962, Indian immigrants had the lowest percentage at 2%, before reaching 14% in 2002. Moreover, the UK and Vietnam were equally represented as settlers to Australia in 1962. The proportion Vietnamese emigrants exceeded the UK and ended at 13% in 2002 compared to 10% in 1962.
