The table shows forested land in millions of hectares in different parts of the world.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The chart gives key data on the amount of forested area, measured in millions of hectares, of six continents all over the world, namely Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America in the three years: 1990, 2000 and 2005.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that whereas the number of hectares of forest in Europe and Asia witnessed an upward trend during the time frame, the opposite is true for the rest of the world. Another interesting point is that the area of forest in Europe registered the highest figure over the given period.
Looking at the details, as regards Asia, the figure started at 576 million hectares in 1990, at which point it experienced a slight decline of 6 million hectares before a surge to 584 million hectares at the end of the period. Europe showed a similar pattern. The area of forest in 1990 was 989 million hectares, followed by a significant rise to 1001 million hectares by the year 2005.
By contrast, the forest area of both Africa and South America underwent a sharp fall of 58 and 64 million hectares over the period, reaching 691 and 882 million hectares respectively in 2005. Similarly, the figure for North America decreased marginally to 705 million hectares in 2000, after which it levelled off until the end of the period. Similarly, the forest cover of Oceania, also the lowest point of all continents, went through a decline of 1 million hectares per year, standing at 197 million hectares in 2005.
