The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph illustrates the changes in the aging population from 1940 to 2040 in the USA, Sweden and Japan.
Overall, the proportion of the elderly people in all three countries is expected to considerably increase, especially in the last 13 years of the period. That means life expectancy in those countries will be extremely high in the future.
The number of people at the age of 60 and more in the USA and Sweden is almost similar over the period. Accounting for 7% and 9% at the start of the period, the figure for senior citizens in the USA and Sweden rose gradually together. However, while the Sweden number continues to increase over the entire period, the USA had a slight decrease in 1995 and will increase again in 2027.
By contrast, there was a moderate decline in the aging population proportion in the first couple of decades, from 5% to 3%, and then the figure remained stable for over 20 years. After that, senior citizens increased gradually and steadily until the sudden jump in 2027, from 10% to 25%.
