WRITING TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The diagram below shows what happens to pollutants from farming and industry once in a river system.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Given is a diagram illustrating what takes place to two separate contaminants created by agriculture and industry (namely fertilizers and heavy metals) in a river ecosystem.
Looking at the details, it is apparent from the information supplied that fertilizers are significantly more simply to be eliminated from the entire system through natural process compared to heavy metals and that the latter are more likely to remain in the river for longer periods of time.
Turning to the lower section of the diagram, it is noteworthy that plants surviving in the river bed filter fertilizers from the ecosystem through a procedure called nitrogen fixation. Heavy metals, yet at the same time, are not absorbed in the same respect and thus either settle at the bottom of the river or continue to flow into the ocean.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the effects of heavy metals on the whole river ecology are considerably more long-lasting than those of fertilizers.
