The line graphs plot the proportion of houses facilitated with electrical appliances as well as how much time is spent on undertaking domestic chores by a household in one country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, electrical devices flourished among households, whereas the number of hours which have been allocated to housework declined in this period.
It is of note that almost every household did not possess any refrigerator in 1920. Surprisingly, the popularity of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners rocketed and refrigerators became indispensable devices in every household in 1980 and leveled off until the end. Likewise, vacuum cleaner reached the same level in 2000 then stayed stable at the beginning of the next century. In contrast, although starting with the highest percentage (40 percent), washing machine’s popularity gradually climbed and was interestingly equal to the proportion of houses with the vacuum cleaners (70 percent respectively).
On the other hand, the amount of time spent on housework per household in 1920 was 50 hours, the largest quantity reported in this graph. However, the figure dramatically plunged to 20 hours per week in 1950 before slowing down and ending up at 10 hours per week in 2019.
