Overall, the number of people born in Asia and other nations living in Australia witnessed an upward trend, with the former seeing the fastest growth while the figure for British people witnessed an opposite trend.
In 1976, the number of Asian people living in Australia stood at just above 2.5% while the percentage of the Australians born in the UK and others were 14% and 11% respectively. Over the next 25 years, the number of people delivered in Asia and others living in Australia rose to 8% and 12% in 2001 while the figure for Britain dropped to 7%. As a consequence, the total number of offshore people living in Australia dropped slightly to 21% in 2001.
In the latter period, the proportion of Australian people born in the UK went down to 5%, whereas opposite patterns are evident in the figures for Australian people of Asian and European descent, with the former rising to 12% and the latter to its high of 15%. The total demographics saw a steep growth to its peak of 25%.
