TOEFL Integrated Question
Both the article and the lecture deal with the question whether if we should benefit from the resources of ocean floor. While the passage clearly states that this will result disastrous outcomes and have a huge impact on marine eco system, the lecturer discusses the points made in the passage and reaches a different conclusion in each time.
Firstly, according to the passage, taking advantage of the resources that are found in the ocean floor will cause a destruction on land, since we need to cover a lot of territory in order to find the minerals that we seek. However, the lecturer opposes this idea by saying that it is sufficient to get small samples from small areas to achieve our goal. Therefore, this would only affect a negligible amount of species as we could do this in the desert like parts of the ocean.
Secondly, the passage mentions that the excavation of the floor will make the settled dust and sand raise and pollute water, potentially bringing poisonous waste products to sea currents which can be spread drastically all over the globe. In contrast, the professor claims that the dust and poisons will not be spread far, and that we just need to stay 500 miles away from the sea creatures.
Finally, the lecturer points out a tendency of increased meat consumption, since the number of people is rising over time. Then, by implementing aquamarine agriculture in large scale in the desert parts of the ocean, it would allow the fish to have plenty of space to survive and the body waste would be diluted, not causing any damage to the quality of the meat.
