Free time activities of the elderly in The United States from 1980 to the present
The line graph illustrates some activities for the elderly during leisure time in the United States From 1990s to 2010s.Overall, the percentages of some free time activities such as hiking, reading, watching TV, and surfing the internet had increased, while watching theatre was decline slightly. Moreover, the majority of elderly people in the US more likely to trek in the nature than others activities, making the highest proportion in the last years.
In the 1980s, the most US’s older people enjoy to watching TV and theatre during spare time, becoming the biggest percentages with 60% and 50% accordingly. However, browsing the internet became the least percentages just above one in ten. In the 1990s, the figure of reading and hiking rose gradually and reached the same level with 40% and going to the theatre became more popular.
When it came to 2000s, reading saw a dramatic drop in popularity to a fifth and the number of people doing other activities showed upward trends. Furthermore, the percentages of US older citizens who likely to attend a theater performance passed the reading curve, increasing rapidly toward the end of century also hiking, reading, and internet browsing rose significantly to 80%, 60%, and 50% respectively. However, watching TV has been decreasing in popularity and still the second most popular activity nowadays amongst this group at the end of the century.
