Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made reading passage.
The reading and the lecture are discussing the likely explanations of the massive extinction occurred at the end of Triassic period. In the passage the author provides three theories describing the reasons that give rise to this extinction. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of this and casts doubt on each of the theories presented in the reading. Actually, he is of the opinion that although they seem plausible, however, they cannot justify the extinction well.
To begin with, the author argues that the falling of sea level lead to destruction of the habitats for ocean and coastal animals that live in shallow levels, which adversely affected the food chains across the world. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. According to the professor, it is indisputable that sea level experienced fluctuations, but, coastal and shallows eco system are capable of adapting environmental changes. Since fall in sea level is gradual, therefore, it could not hurt them unless become very abrupt and sudden.
Secondly, The writer disputes that massive climate cooling owing to the SO2 released by volcanoes is the other theory. This passage asserts that SO2 lead to decreasing the global temperature and many creatures' demise which, finally, causes extinction. The lecturer, in contrast, averts that the SO2 should stay for a long period in order to be detrimental and lowering the global temperature, As a matter of fact, this SO2 was present for a short time and was not long-lasting enough to destroy the animals. Moreover, SO2, normally, combines water in the air and pour down as acid rains which endorse its short resistance.
Finally, the author disputes that asteroids colliding the earth has led to this extinction. Moreover, it is stated in the article that asteroids move the soil and the rock and debris falling up in to the air block the sunlight for a long time which devastates many plants and animals. The lecturer's stance is that few experts agree with this theory. She puts forward to the idea that although the remains of a crater, dating the massive extinction, has been detected in the site, but, it has collided the earth too much before extinction which has nothing to the with it.
