Over the past few decades, the catastrophic effects of droughts have begun to hit home with an estimated 65 million people globally affected by insufficient water supplies. In fact, this problem is the result of human ignorance about environmental issues while it could be addressed by instilling into the public the importance of preserving water resources. To delve deeply into this issue, this essay will explore the causes of water shortages and provide some feasible solutions.
Human excessive use of water is the main factor contributing to this disturbing phenomenon, and this is particularly true for those ignorant about the importance of water conservation and sustainability. For instance, some people are insensitive to the dwindling water resources, shutting their eyes to leaky pipes, valves and faucets at home, unabashedly justifying their actions by arguing that the intermittent drips have nothing to do with water scarcity. Others who lack awareness of water conservation perceive the water supply as a perennial spring, leaving the tap water running when brushing their teeth or doing the dishes. Still others have no scruples about having a water fight at their backyard. Due to these people taking water usage for granted, it is not surprising to expect more stringent water rationing in the future.
Despite the threat of water shortages, this crisis could be solved by the collaboration among governments, schools and family education. To begin with, the authorities concerned should adopt a zero-tolerance policy on overuse of water and make laws that restrict one adult to one ton of water per month. Anyone who goes over the limit will be subject to severe penalties. School authorities, on the other hand, are held accountable for raising public awareness of water conservation and inculcating into people how to use water more efficiently to reduce unnecessary waste. Most importantly, parents have an obligation to provide children with water-saving tips, encouraging them to lead an environment-friendly lifestyle.
In conclusion, water scarcity is a complicated problem that affects scores of people nowadays. There is no single cause of this global crisis, but human ignorance and selfishness are the decisive factor leading to unprecedented levels of drought. However, the detrimental effects of drought could be mitigated as long as we make a concerted effort to increase public awareness of water conservation and environmental protection.
