Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)
Upon returning to my home country, Nigeria, I intend to use the new skills and knowledge I will acquire from my post-graduate studies in UK by doing internships to create professional networks and have research experience, search for a job as I anticipate that getting my first job after returning home will not be too difficult given my existing professional and academic qualifications I have obtained so far. Moreover, since I have built excellent relationships at Nigerian Breweries Plc, it will be the first place that I seek employment from. The position I have in mind is that of a biotechnologist a sit involves designing and implementing research studies, working with laboratory technicians on reserach and identifying how the research can be applied to improve lives.
My medium-term career goal is to establish a Fashion-beauty business: I will be providing wide range beauty and fashion services such as facials and skin care, hair styling, make-over and fashion design. To achieve this, I will go through trainings (although I currently have the basic knowledge of makeover sand hair styling), to get certification. This will present a challenge for me as it will be the first time I will be stepping out of formal employment into running my own business. This I plan to venture into after about 4 years of employment. By this time, I expect to have saved enough capital to sustain my business for at least one year. Thus one year period will allow me to roll up my sleeves and build the necessary foundation for the business from the ground up before it becomes profitable and sustainable on its own. I quite look forward to this challenge.
Furthermore, I will give myself about ten years to develop my skills, expertise and build a strong network of professionals in the corporate world before I become a certified researcher as my long-term career goal. By this time, I will be in a much better position to use all the knowledge I have gained from my education and work experience to provide the requisite expert advice that the government and government bodies need. Also, involving my myself in charity works has been my plan, as I would like to help poor children gain access to quality education and lives.
All of these plans coalesce with everything the UK currently engage in Nigeria. The UK has quite a healthy economic relationship with Nigeria, as Nigeria faces a number of challenges to its future growth and development. Thus, the UK helps in saving Nigerian lives especially in the north east by providing essential items or the means to buy them, better health and education, create jobs and tackle corruption. Also, the department for international development (DFID) support include; expert advice and investment on infrastructure development; delivering training to increase people's skills enabling them to find jobs and improve incomes and making Nigeria an easier country to do business with.
