The graph below shows the proportion of population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries
The chart depicts detailed information on the 65+ demographics in three distinct nations over a century, starting from the year 1940.
Overall, it is evident that there is an overall growth in the number of senior citizens of three countries during the period. Another interesting point is that Japan is predicted to undergo a contrasting shift, becoming predominant among three categories in the future.
In 1940, nearly 10% of the US population was elderly, followed by Swedish with roughly 7%, both of these numbers then registered a constant rise to around 15% in orders, but soon fell modestly by 1% or 2%. While there was a period of stability in the figure for the former, the latter varied between 15% and 20%. From 2023, the figures are forecast to rise back to around 23% and 25% respectively in 2040.
Meanwhile, Japan was the country with the smallest ederly proportion. In 1940, the data stood at only 5%, and despite some negligible changes over the following years, this figure was always under 10%. It was not until 2020 that Japan is estimated to surge and reach 28% in 2040.
