The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The given line graph illustrates the changes in the percentage of people at the age of 65 and over from 1940 to 2040 in three countries namely Japan, Sweden and the USA.
Overall, it is clear that an upward trend of aging population can be witnessed in all three countries throughout the period. The proportion recorded in Japan consistently held the lowest rank in the past and is predicted to dramatically surpass the other two countries to take the first position in 2040.
Commencing with the data of the USA in 1940, the percentage of people aged 65 and over was just roughly 8%, then the figure increased by nearly twofold to around 15% in 1980. After that, a dramatic rise is predicted to increase in the proportion of people aged 65 and over, from just under 15% in 2020 to approximately 24% in 2040. A similar pattern was observed in Sweden where there was a remarkable increase of three times in the percentage of people from the age of 65, from nearly 6% to under 15% in 1980. Then, it continued going up to reach a peak of 20% in 2017, and it is foreseen that the percentage of this age group will keep increasing to the highest point, at approximately 23%.
Regarding the percentage of people from the age of 65 in Japan, it dipped and recovered between 1940 and 2000. Over the following 25 years, the figure is expected gradually to 10% before rocketing to approximately 27% at the end of the period observed.
