The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The given line graph gives information about the rate of old citizens in three different nations namely Japan, Sweden, and the US over a period of a century starting from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, as can be seen from the line graph, an upward trend is expected to be seen in the percentage of residents aged 65 and over in both three countries. In addition, the figure for Japan is predicted to experience the most noticeable change over the given period.
In 1940, the proportion of 65 and over people in the US was the highest, at roughly 9%, while the figures for Sweden and Japan were slightly lower, at approximately 7% and 5% respectively. After six decades, a significant increase of 12% to about 19% was seen in the percentage of people aged 65 and over in Japan, helping this country to have the highest rate in the three nations. At the same time, after witnessing a slight decline and a gradual rise, the proportion of the older generation in Japan was less than 8%, whereas the figure for Sweden increased slightly to about 14%.
In 2040, the percentage of people in the 65-and-over age group in Japan is projected to rocket by 19% to 27% and become the highest figure in the chart. Meanwhile, significant rises to roughly 25% and 23.5% are expected to happen in the figures for Sweden and the USA respectively.
