TOEFL Writing Test - Test 1 (2022)
both the reading and the lecture discuss about online graduate programs. The passage argues that online courses fail to provide assistant from professors, to offer high standard contents as well as to get top school involved. The lecturer, on the other hand, disagree with these claims. He points out what the reading mentions are not totally true and support his ideas with three reasons.
First, the reading emphasizes the importance of interaction between students and professors conventional graduate programs provides. Unlike the traditional programs, the online ones, according to the reading, cannot provide opportunities for students to get accquaintance with their professors or have insightful communication with them outside of classrooms.Instead of considering the outside-classroom interactoin as the previliges of the traditional schools, the lecturer, however, states that it is merely students' preference and can be achieved in the online programs as well. In these programs, specifically, students who prefer to contact school faculty members can always do so via email or telephone.
Second, the reading pinpoints that traditional graduate programs are better than the online ones, in which courses neither hard nor meet a high criteria. Without challenges or a high standard, as mentioned by the reading, the online programs are taken less serious by both students and faculty members. The lecturer, in contrast, disapproves of the reading and argues that the online courses are made as the same standard as the traditional ones by professors and provides more challenges for students. Regarding the challenges, students among twenty online programs, who serviced by the lecturer, reveal that the online programs they take are more difficult compaired to the traditional ones as they have to put extra effort on self discipline and time management if they keep concentrating on screen.
Last, the reading asserts that taking online programs is not an option for ambitious students as these programs are only offered in ordinary universities instead of the ivy or other prestigious ones. Despite famous schools might offer a few online courses, to earn a degree from them, students are still required to take classess on campus. Contrary to the reading, the lecturer claims that top universities do offer online programs for students to earn a degree, not just a few credits. The ivy leagues except princeton, for example, provides entire online programs for students to graduate. The same goes for many other top universities too. Even in princeton, many online courses are more than a few to be chosen from.
