The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line chart compares the proportion of elderly people in three nations from 1940, with projections up to the year 2040. The units are measured in percentages. It is obvious that generally, the number of ageing people increases throughout the given period.
Looking at the information in more detail, there is a striking similarity between the USA’s figure and the Sweden’s figure at the start of the period (1940-1990), with the percentage of elderly people increasing from 9% and 7% in 1940 to 14% and 13% in 1990, respectively. At the next period (1990-2015), The Sweden’s figure climbed up significantly to reach 18% in 2015. By contrast, The USA’s figure slightly decreased by 1% to 13% in 2015.
The percentages of ageing people in the two countries are expected to rise. Regardless of a fall between 2015 and 2025, the proportion of elderly people continues to increase at 25% in 2040. Likewise, USA’s figure rises by roughly 10% to 23%.
On the other hand, at the beginning of the given period, Japan’s figure continued to drop reaching its lowest point at 3% in 1960. This trend, however, recovered gradually after 1985 and is estimated to jump dramatically after 2030, by 18% to 28% in 2040.
