The line graph aims to compare 4 different ways to transport commodities in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, there was an increase in the quantities of goods transported by road, water, and pipeline with goods transported by road witnessing the most dramatic rise, while the figure for commodities transported by rail saw a fluctuation. In addition, the number of products transported by road was the highest during the years examined.
About 70 million tonnes of stocks were transported by road in 1974, with a subsequent decrease to downward of 70 million tonnes, and a final rise to its peak at approximately 100 million tonnes in 2002. The figure for transporting goods by ships saw a similar change but to a lesser extent, starting from just under 40 million tonnes, hovering around 58 million tonnes, before reaching its peak at the north of 60 million tonnes.
The number of goods transported by pipeline started at around 5 million tonnes, after which it experienced growth to roughly 18 million tonnes, before ending the period at about 20 million tonnes. Opposite changes can be seen in the figure for products transported by rail, which experienced a decline to around 30 million tonnes, then fluctuated in range from 30 million tonnes to 35 million tonnes, before witnessing an increase to just over 40 million tonnes in 2002.
