Wild tuna, a species of large ocean fish, have decreased in number because of overfishing Recently, attempts have been made to farm tuna by feeding the fish in ocean cages until they become large enough for sale. However, tuna farming has faced several problems and criticisms.
First, female tuna do not lay eggs in captivity, so tuna farmers must capture large quantities of young wild tuna to stock their farms, further reducing wild tuna populations. These young tuna are caged and fed until they are large enough to be sold. Since the captured females in tuna farms cannot lay eggs to replace the tuna that are sold, tuna farmers continue to catch young wild tuna to keep their farms going and so worsen the decline in wild tuna populations.
Second, tuna raised on farms are very expensive because they depend on a costly, high-protein food derived from other fish. Tuna feed almost exclusively on small fish, which supply them with the proteins and nutrients they require. A single tuna can grow more than four meters long, weigh close to 700 kilograms, and eat 70 kilograms of food a day! It is unlikely that tuna farms can remain profitable while supplying so much expensive food for the tuna.
Third, tuna confined to ocean cages are likely to become infested with parasites, organisms that feed on and weaken the animal they attach to. Tuna farmers off the coast of southern Australia have had problems with infestations of blood flukes, a type of parasite that lives within the blood vessels and heart of infected fish. Parasite infestations weaken tuna, slow their growth, and can even cause death, usually by making them susceptible to other diseases. Tuna farms in southern Australia have had 10 percent of their tuna die before they could be sold.
Both the reading passage and the lecture focuses how to increase the population of tuna for fishing and not endanger their population. The former tries to give three reasons why there is a current decline in fishing of tuna and the growing of young tuna on the farms, but the latter disagrees on all the three reasons and provides with methods for better ways for increasing the population of tuna.
First of all, the passage mentions that in captivity the female tuna avoids to lay eggs. It further mentions that that the farmers should capture more of young wild tuna and grow them in the cage until they are large enough to be sold this in turn will reduce the decline of the tuna population. However, the professor in the lecture mentions that researchers have devised an hormone that can be injected in the tuna that will help the female tuna fish to lay eggs in captivity. According to the professor, the researcher have tested this and there are no health risks involved and with this method the population of the wild tuna won't be affected.
Second of all, the passage talks about the high expense the farmers have to face for raising the young wild tuna in their farms because tuna's diet include high protein from several other small fishes. Tuna needs almost 70 kilograms of these small fishes to feed on for the supply of high proteins and nutrients they desire which in turn helps the tuna to grow up to 700 kilograms. However, the professor in the lecture argues that the high-protein diet of tuna can be helped with the plants that has enough proteins and nutrients to fulfil tuna's food requirements. According to the professor, plants not only helps with the diet but these plants are almost inexpensive and can be easily afforded by the farmers.
Finally, the passage mentions that tunas that are confined in ocean cages are open to more risks of infestations of blood flukes. Nevertheless, unlike the two arguments about the professor in the lecture mentions that the if the cages are far deeper in the ocean that will help the tuna because the parasite cannot survive under such deep waters. Therefore, if the tuna are caged offshore in deep water it will save them from the infestations of blood flukes and help them grow.
