Some people do not go directly to college but travel or work for a short time. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
In this day and age, going directly to college is no longer a popular choice, which is modified with traveling or working for a short period of time. In my opinion, the drawbacks of this trend are overshadowed by its benefits.
On the one hand, a short time of traveling or working may provide people with essential skills. This is because, when they have a chance to go to foreign countries or work with other people, they will soon form plenty of skills such as communication skill, foreign language skill or cooperation skill, etc., which are beneficial for them in college. Another feasible explanation is that doing this in the short term can enable them to relax. A recent research in Britain, by way of illustration, has shown that there are 300,000 people choose to go abroad or work in small firms before going to college with an eye to relieving stress and being more relaxed. Thus, it is clear that the benefits do derive from working and traveling before college.
On the other hand, taking time off to travel or work for a short time can lead to difficulty in acclimatizing. That is because people do this in the short term, and there is little chance for them to acquaint themselves with their new surroundings. As a result, this will trigger boredom, tire, and impatience in them. For example, according to the surveys conducted by Shanghai University, China last year, there were nearly 500,000 youngsters choosing their gap years to work for small companies; however, after a 5-month period, they decided to give up due to the fact that they found it arduous to acclimatize. Through this lens, it is understandable why the aforementioned trend can have some detrimental points.
In conclusion, I believe that taking a year off to travel or work before attending university would be highly advantageous for the young today.
