easter island population decline cause.
The author explained few theories to explain the decline in population on eastern island, however the professor estimated serious flaws in each theory.
To begin with, First theory given by author is deforestation which explains that people cut the huge area of forest to fulfil the needs and consequence get worst. However the professor disagrees with this theory and explained that when Hunter loop reached there he saw the deforestation but the growing factor was present that grassland and this could help to regrow forest. The professor further added on this opinion is that people had the tree which they can use for cooking and transport in absence of grown up forest.
Another theory explained by author is, rats prevented the regrowth of forest because it ate the fresh shoots. The professor claims this theory and illustrated his opinion that, its true if rats ate the shoot they can disturb the ecosystem but in no way can result in population decline. He shows some evidence that shows that people could live further and that is rat bones, which explains that people on island eats the rat and chicken.
The last theory made by the author is the war between long-eared and short-eared people. This theory explain that first the short-ear killed and then long-eared were ditched, and burned. The professor again sees weakness in this viewpoint , he explained that in 1770 there were 1000 people on island which is a huge number and the war the professor took place in 1680 that is nearly 100 years ago. Professor believe such past war would not impact the recent population.
These this is how the professor explained that every theory made by author is incorrect because all the evidence lack somewhere and theory to explain the decline in population remain mysterious.
