The table elucidates the distance of travel route made in different modes by a British person from 1985 to 2000. It is clearly observed from the graph that, the average distance travelled in England has increased except for walking, bicycle and local bus. The most preferable modes to travel amongst British citizens were cars in both years, 1985 and in 2000. Another thing to point out is that the total number of modes in 1985 represents two-thirds of the ones in 2000.
In 1985, the average distance travelled by English cars was 3,199 miles and 4,806 miles in 2000, while those for taxi were about 13 miles in 1985 and 42 miles in 2000. The second most common way of travelling in 1985 was local bus of 429 miles (excluding the other modes of transports), which was decreased by almost half to 274 miles per head in 2000. Train and other modes were becoming popular modes of transportation of travelling by 2000; the average distance travelled was 289 miles (in 1985) to 366 miles and 450 miles (in 1985) to 585 miles, respectively. Bicycle was becoming the least preferred way of travelling by 2000, which is amounting only 51 miles per person and 41 miles per person for these two consecutive years.
Walking was used for an average of 255 miles travel by each person in 1985 and that decreased to 237 miles in 2000, which shows the decline of walking usage by British. In 1985, 54 miles distance was travelled by long distance buses while this distance increased significantly to 124 miles per English person.
