decrease salinity in the Salton Sea
The reading passage explores how to decrease the rising salinity in the Salton Sea, a salty inland lake, and several options are proposed. As reasonable as these points seem, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on them, indicating that all are unrealistic.
To begin with, the author suggests that we can refresh the lake’s water with desalination facilities. By heating the water in the facilities, we can return water to the lake without any salt and other materials left. Conversely, disputing the reading’s point, the lecturer notes that several problems will follow on the close heels of it. Since the water will evaporate into steam during the desalination, some toxic materials left behind in the facilities might spread into the air, inducing a health risk for human breathing. Therefore, the lecturer disagrees with this proposal.
Second, even though the author claims that we can pipe ocean water which is 20 percent less salty the lake water into the lake to dilute the salt level, the lecturer argues that it’s a misconception. She details that the local government can't afford the pipelines or canals that carry ocean water. Furthermore, she mentions that the nearest shoreline is still too far from the lake, making it hard to build long enough pipelines. Accordingly, the lecturer believes that it might be difficult for this option to work.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the article that we can construct walls to divide the lake into several sections and thus control the salinity in the main and largest section. She points out that the lake is located in a place where many geological activities often occur. For example, she states that earthquakes can destroy walls and cause fresh water to mix with salty water again. As a result, the lecturer finds this alternative not plausible.
