rhino horn
The reading passage explores the extinction happening among rhinos because of the poachers who kill them for their horns, and several ideas have been proposed to solve this problem. As reasonable as these points seem, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on them.
To begin, the author suggests that people can remove the horns of rhinos living in the wild, making them less attractive to hunters. Conversely, disputing the reading's point, the lecturer claims this action will not be practical and good. Since rhinos' horns serve several significant purposes, such as searching for food and water and protecting their territory, dehorning will induce disadvantages and reduce chances for rhinos to survive in the wild. Therefore, the lecturer dismisses the action of dehorning.
Second, even though the author states that we can educate the horn-buyers that these horns don't have a health value, the lecturer argues that this is a misconception. This is because consumers usually have a strong belief that horns are beneficial to health. In addition, this belief has been spread in the old times. Accordingly, the lecturer believes that it's unlikely to change those believers' minds.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the passage that the government can legalize the sales of rhino horn. She points out that there are some people who didn't buy rhino horns since it is illegal. Nevertheless, if the government accepts the sales, they might start purchasing them, and thus the demand will gradually increase. Furthermore, according to the selling principle, the price will also increase after the demand has increased. As a result, the number of poachers will grow as well and the market for rhino horns will become larger, which the lecturer believes won't solve the problem of extinction.
