privatize Amtrak

Conversely, disputing the reading's point, the lecturer claims that people have misunderstood the main purpose of Amtrak. Amtrak was built to satisfy the basic needs of the people dwelling in remote regions since they have the same rights as the people in cities. Therefore, the lecturer believes that the government shouldn't view Amtrak as a tool for making profits and thus they shouldn't sell it to private companies.
Second, even though the author states that it will be unfair for private transportation companies such as airlines that the government provides Amtrak with funds, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. This is because the government also has financially supported private companies in plentiful ways. For example, the government is responsible for the weather satellites on which airlines depend to fly safely. Accordingly, the lecturer dismisses the unfairness mentioned in the article.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the reading that the government should distribute its funds to improve the highway system since most people drive their private cars to travel between cities. She points out that the reason that people don't choose trains as their transportation is that it is outdated. As a result, the lecturer recommends that like in Japan and Europe, the US government should spend money improving the railway system so that residents can not only have a better and faster way to travel but also be glad to take trains.
