The reading makes the point that several solutions have been proposed by ecologists to control the cheatgrass, an invasive species which would invade and drive out other plants. The professor, in contrast, holds a different view by stating that the solutions in the reading are not likely to work well.
First, even though the reading passage suggests that animals like cattle or other livestock which feed on cheatgrass could be used as grazers, the professor argues in the lecture that grazers do not like cheatgrass at all. So, if other plants are included in fields where cheatgrass is prevalent, grazers would eat other plants at first. As a result, other plants, even the protected plants would be destroyed by the grazers.
Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that using controlled fires is an easy and quick way to eliminate cheatgrass, the professor contends that cheatgrass would return quickly. This is because most of the seeds produced by cheatgrass are buried under the surface and fire would not harm them, which means although the cheatgrass on one field would be cleaned by the fire, their seeds below surface could still germinate and sprout quickly.
Finally, contrary to what is mentioned in the reading that fungal parasite which specifically attacks cheatgrass would be accessible, the professor maintains that it is not an efficient way. Since fungus and cheatgrass have lived together for thousands of years. In this case, cheatgrass has developed a system against fugus, which means that only weak and sick cheatgrass would be attacked and those healthy cheatgrass could resist the fungus.
