Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the Chaco Canyon settlements in United states which also referred as great houses( huge buildings). Although there are no evidences, the author of the reading states the way how these houses were used. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions the uses are not convincing and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
Firstly, the writer states that the houses were used for dwellings and has a capacity for hundreds of people. In addition, the houses are likable with that of native appartment. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that if there was enough space for many people then why there were only few fire places for cooking? Thus, it seems to be fake to considered the houses as residential one.
Secondly, according to the reading the attributes of Chaco houses were good for storing crops as there the storage was great. Furthermore, it can store food for long period of time without any defects. The speaker on other hand points out that, there were no traces of maize on floor and not even a container for storing grains. Therefore, this doesnot support the idea of using houses for storage purpose.
Finally, The reading notes that those houses were used for ceremonial reasons. To be more precise, exacavating mound found many broken pots that might be used at ceremonies. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that those broken materials were of construction works such as from building of large houses.
As we can see the author and lecture holds very conflicting views on Chaco houses. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
