Some people spend most of their lives living close to where they were born.
What might be the reason for this?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
It is said that getting settled in the vicinity of one's hometown for the majority of life is what a number of people do. This essay will explain how the sense of security it gives might be the reason and will demonstrate that while it can reduce the pressure of daily life hassles, it may narrow down one's opportunities.
It can be asserted that the feeling of security is rooted in familiarity, and birthplaces are where they are well known. Familiar things are less likely to be harmful, and you will be secure in known environments. Evolutionary studies have shown that people instinctively seek familiar situations because they lead to safety, which is why many people tend to live near where they were born.
On the one hand, the benefit of living close to their birthplace is that individuals can rely on unconditional support since they are associated with family. During financial crises, misunderstandings between couples, and generally, in hard times, the immediate relatives' help plays a significant role in overcoming difficulties. For instance, one of my colleagues who owns an apartment in the same neighbourhood as his mother-in-law says, "She looks after her grandchild while we are at work, and this is excellent because there is no need to search for babysitters or be worried about the kid."
On the other hand, throughout history, humans constantly explored new areas, not just out of curiosity and greed but also to improve their lives. Having said that, staying in the native locality will diminish one's anticipation of the future horizon and limit potential improvement. My sister is a perfect example of this. After she graduated from one of Canada's top universities, the University of Waterloo, and started working as a researcher, even though she could stay there and become a professor, she moved to Toronto to continue her Ph.D. studies at the University of Toronto to broaden her prospects.
In conclusion, the protection that comes from the sensation of closeness might be a justifiable reason why some choose to reside near where they were born. However, even if it eases the stress of day-to-day concerns, restricting future developments is its demerit.
